CQE’s 4th Annual Alumni College Day

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

On Tuesday May 25, 2010, CQE held its 4th annual Alumni College Day. Over 30 graduates from the Metuchen High School Classes of 2008 and 2009 returned to represent their colleges, to speak about their experiences, and to offer advice to their former schoolmates. Four presentations, one to each grade 9 through 12, featured a different perspective on how high school students can prepare themselves for their next steps beyond MHS.

The freshman learned how good study habits today would be helpful to them later on, as well as how to begin thinking about the type of college they’d like to attend in terms of size, location, and offerings. Sophomores and juniors heard sound advice on admissions, from taking SATs to doing community service work, to the importance of visiting schools before applying. Some alumni spoke of the benefits of getting the application begun, and perhaps finished, over the summer before senior year. The senior session focused on college life: making friends, joining clubs, reaching out to professors during their office hours, understanding the consequences of underage drinking, and taking responsibility for the everyday details of eating, getting enough sleep, staying healthy and living on a budget.   Each session allowed for ample time for questions from the audience.

This year our annual Alumni Day also featured two students who completed a gap year, one who studied in Belgium before her freshman year and one who spent a year in a formal gap program in Israel which featured  learning the Hebrew language, doing volunteer work, and traveling throughout the country. We also had, for the first time, a student who just graduated from Middlesex County College in two years and who successfully transferred to a four year state school. Her advice included staying on track by visiting her advisor each semester, studying hard, and asking for help.  She reminded students that they needed to go through the college application process, which includes writing the college essay, during their second year at MCC to ensure a smooth transition. Also present were two students who successfully transferred from one school to another after realizing they were not as happy as they thought they’d be at their original college. Their message: Transfer to find a better fit.

The following schools were represented by the alumni: American University, Bowdoin College, Colby College, Drew University, Fairleigh Dickinson, George Washington University,  Ithaca, Kean, Lafayette, Marist, Middlesex County College, Muhlenberg College, NJIT, NYU, Penn State, Pratt Institute, Quinnipiac, Ramapo, Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute, Rutgers, Southern Vermont College, Stevens Institute of Technology, SUNY Oswego, Temple, Tufts, the University of Connecticut, the University of Michigan, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Southern California, Villanova, Waynesburg, and West Virginia University.

The MHS Alumni College Day is a program that is co-sponsored by the Guidance Department of Metuchen High School and Citizens for Quality Education. CQE thanks Mrs. Grauer, Mrs. Hanbridge and Mr. Peragallo for their continued support and valuable leadership.  We thank the alumni who shared their time and honest answers with the students and teachers of Metuchen High.
