An Upcoming CQE Program: The Benefits of Family Reading Aloud

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

On Sunday November 14 at 2 PM, the entire community is invited to a free screening of the documentary film Jim Trelease: On Reading Aloud, in the Community Room of the Metuchen Public Library, 480 Middlesex Avenue.

Noted educator and reading specialist Jim Trelease is the author of the million-copy bestseller The Read-Aloud Handbook, first published in 1982 and recently updated in a 6th-edition. This seminal work launched the author’s thirty-year career as a motivational speaker, visiting community groups and schools, encouraging parents to begin reading to their children in infancy and to continue throughout the middle and upper school years. The film, starring  Trelease, discusses the benefits of family-reading and includes research from the experts.  Attendees will receive a brochure with helpful ideas and an annotated bibliography of suggested picture books and chapter books that every child should read.  A copy of The Read-Aloud Handbook will be raffled off in a free lottery for those who attend the event.

This program is sponsored by the Metuchen Citizens for Quality Education (CQE), which has been an advocate of Trelease’s work. CQE’s longstanding Story Lunch program at Campbell School was inspired by the author’s Handbook. Please visit the Website to learn more about Citizens for Quality Education. Learn More About Us

In 2002, the district embarked on a promising, new writing instruction project in our middle school.  The program, known as The Writers’ Room, involves parents and other community members as the key components.  As volunteer coaches, they provide assistance to students with their classroom writing assignments on a regular basis.  Modeled on a program which was developed in Montclair, our Writers’ Room has been adapted to meet the particular needs of Edgar School. Typically, our program includes a cadre of 10 to 15 active coaches, participating in about 10 classrooms.  Our goals for the future are for most of the students in grades 5 through 8 to participate in Writers’ Room on a weekly basis.
